A former intelligence officer has revealed that Gerry Adams, the Sinn Féin leader, was a member of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) army council. This claim is being made in an effort to hold him personally liable for decisions related to car bombings in London and Manchester.
The thing is… I’ve always had mixed feelings about Gerry Adams and his role in the IRA. On one hand, you gotta respect the guy’s conviction to fight for what he believed in. But on another hand, it’s hard not to see him as a symbol of the conflict that tore Ireland apart.
I guess my concern here is with accountability. If we’re going to hold people responsible for their actions, then shouldn’t Gerry Adams be held accountable too? I mean, car bombings are serious business and they caused real harm to innocent people. Just because he was part of an army council doesn’t excuse his involvement in those acts.
