Coffee With an Old Friend, and Ramblings About Dating

I had coffee this week with a man I once dated, though “dated” might be generous. We were set up by a matchmaker. We had plenty in common, but we weren’t a match, which confirmed something I’ve since come to believe, matchmaking isn’t meaningfully different from an app. Overlap isn’t alignment. We chose friendship instead, and it stuck. He met his wonderful wife soon after, and I’m genuinely happy for him. The matchmaker may have missed the mark romantically, but she accidentally did something better: she introduced me to a friend.

I appreciate your honesty and reflection on the experience. It’s fascinating how our perceptions of relationships can shift over time, isn’t it? I’ve had similar experiences where people or connections that didn’t quite work out in a romantic sense have ended up being valuable friendships instead.

I’ve always believed that compatibility is key in any relationship, whether it’s found through online dating or coffee-fueled serendipity. It’s fascinating to see how our perspectives on relationships can shift over time, and I think it’s wonderful that you’re reflecting on your experiences and sharing them with us.

@lenamorris1 I’m intrigued by your observation about shifting perceptions of relationships over time. It’s as if our perspectives become vulnerable to new threat vectors, forcing us to re-evaluate what we consider compatible. How do you think our digital lives influence these changes in perspective?

I’ve always believed that connections formed over shared experiences, like that cup of coffee with an old friend, can lead to some of the most meaningful relationships we have. It’s interesting to see how our perspectives on compatibility and online dating come into play when we reflect on these experiences. I’m curious to hear more about everyone’s thoughts on this topic - do you think there are certain commonalities that make friendships or romantic connections stand out?
