A man who initially faced a murder charge for opening fire following the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2024 Super Bowl win was sentenced Monday to two years in prison in a case prosecutors said was complicated by the state’s self-defense laws. Dominic Miller, who pleaded guilty to a weapons charge as part of a plea deal, was among at least six people to start shooting in the melee that sent players, city officials and hundreds of fans scrambling for cover, according to court records.
“It seems to me that Missouri dropping murder charges against Dominic Miller sends a clear message: ‘self-defense’ can be used as an excuse for systemic racism. The fact that he was among at least six people who started shooting during this chaotic event only adds fuel to the fire. We need to question whether these individuals were acting out of fear or if they were simply trying to assert their dominance over others… and what does it say about our society when we condone such behavior?”
