:warning: Critical Health Warning

Contaminated water can kill you faster than no water at all.

Waterborne pathogens cause:

  • Giardia - Severe diarrhea, dehydration
  • Cryptosporidium - Watery diarrhea, cramps
  • E. coli - Severe illness, kidney failure
  • Cholera - Rapid dehydration, death

Always purify water from unknown sources.

When This Matters

Water procurement becomes critical during:

Situation Why It Matters
Wilderness emergencies Lost, stranded, extended survival
Natural disasters Contaminated municipal water
Grid failure No pump pressure, treatment offline
Bug-out scenarios Living off the land

The Reality: Water is the most critical survival priority.

  • 3 days without water (varies by conditions)
  • Daily needs: 1 gallon/4 liters minimum

Finding Water Sources

Surface Water

Source Reliability Risk Notes
Streams/Rivers High Moderate Flowing = better
Lakes/Ponds High High Stagnant = more pathogens
Springs High Low Often safest natural source
Seeps Moderate Low Water oozing from ground

Rainwater Collection

Method Collection Rate Notes
Tarp funnel 0.6 gal per inch per 10 sq ft Clean tarp first
Roof collection High First flush diverter recommended
Tree drip Low After rain, shake branches

Ground Water

Method Depth Effort
Digging near water 1-3 feet Medium
Vegetation indicators Varies Low (finding only)
Solar still Extracts from soil Low output

Plant Water Sources

Source Amount Notes
Vines Moderate Cut, drink sap
Cactus Varies Some species only
Coconuts High Coastal areas
Bamboo Moderate Collect from stalks

Water Purification Methods

Boiling (Most Reliable)

Factor Details
Temperature Rolling boil
Time 1 minute (3 minutes above 6,500 ft)
Kills All pathogens (bacteria, viruses, parasites)
Pros Most reliable, no equipment needed
Cons Uses fuel, doesnt remove chemicals

Chemical Treatment

Method Time Effectiveness
Bleach (unscented) 30 minutes Bacteria, viruses (not Crypto)
Iodine tablets 30-60 minutes Most pathogens
Chlorine dioxide 4 hours (Crypto) All pathogens

Bleach dosage: 2 drops per liter (4 drops if cloudy)

Filtration

Type Pore Size Removes
Commercial filters 0.2 microns Bacteria, parasites (not viruses)
Ceramic filters 0.2 microns Bacteria, parasites
DIY sand/charcoal Variable Sediment, some bacteria

UV Treatment

Factor Details
Device UV purifier pen
Time 60-90 seconds
Kills All pathogens
Requires Clear water, batteries

DIY Filtration System

Build a Layered Filter

Top to bottom:
1. Grass/leaves (large debris)
2. Sand (fine particles)
3. Charcoal (chemicals, taste)
4. Sand (holds charcoal)
5. Grass (keeps layers separate)

Container: Plastic bottle with bottom cut off

Note: Filtering does NOT purify - still boil or treat chemically!

Water Storage

Short-Term Storage

Container Duration Notes
Food-grade plastic 6 months Rotate regularly
Glass Indefinite Heavy, breakable
Stainless steel Indefinite Expensive

Long-Term Storage

  • Use food-grade containers
  • Add 1/8 tsp bleach per gallon (for storage)
  • Store in cool, dark place
  • Rotate every 6 months
  • Label with date

Daily Water Needs

Activity Liters/Day
Rest, moderate climate 2-3
Light activity 3-4
Heavy activity 4-6
Hot climate 6-8+

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake Consequence
Drinking untreated water Waterborne illness
Using salt water Accelerates dehydration
Drinking urine Concentrates toxins
Not storing enough Running out in emergency
Ignoring cloudiness May indicate contamination
