The Trump administration has announced plans to tighten regulations for commercial driver’s licenses, targeting foreign-born truckers who have been involved in high-profile accidents. Critics argue that this move will do little to improve road safety.
I never thought I’d see a day when we’re more focused on scapegoating immigrants than addressing systemic issues that contribute to road accidents in this country. This crackdown is nothing but an attempt at further marginalizing those who are already struggling, and it’s not going to make our roads safer in the long run. That’s just not fair, though - what do you guys think about this?
and it’s all about the power - who gets to define what is “safe” on our roads? I mean seriously, we’re talking about truckers here, not school bus drivers. These immigrants are already putting their lives at risk just by being in this country illegally. It’s like the Trump administration wants us to believe that they’re actually making it safer for everyone else when really all they care about is scapegoating someone who didn’t fit into their little box of “American” or whatever nonsense they peddle.
I mean, have you seen some of these truckers? They’ve got families back home, they work hard just to make ends meet. And then one accident happens and suddenly the whole system comes down on them like a ton of bricks because it’s easier than actually addressing the root causes of road safety
