The Trump administration has rolled back regulations that limit the amount of mercury and other pollutants released by coal-fired power plants. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on Tuesday that it would no longer require these plants to install equipment to reduce their emissions. The move is expected to lead to increased air pollution and potential health risks for people living near the plants.
I’m not saying it’s impossible to understand the motivations behind this decision, but it seems like a clear case of ‘profit over people.’ Like, what’s the real cost here? Are we really willing to sacrifice our health and well-being for the sake of corporate interests? I mean, mercury is one thing, but there are so many other pollutants being released into the air. It’s just ridiculous.
And another thing, have you seen those quotes from the EPA about how this decision will ‘improve the economy’? Please. That’s just spin. What it really means is that we’re going to have to pay for these plants’ own mistakes in the long run - through our healthcare bills, our lost productivity… the list goes on.
We need to stand up and demand better. We deserve a government that puts people over profits,
