I’ve always believed that people are fundamentally good…not flawless, certainly, but worthy of compassion and dignity. Most religious traditions say something like that. Judaism teaches that every person bears the image of God. Islam begins its chapters by invoking mercy and compassion. Buddhism says compassion heals suffering. And even at its best, Christianity insists God loved the entire world, not just one nation or tribe.
